Why is purpose important in life?

There is a fairly popular trend - to make a list of plans, to do, goals in order to return to the list after a while and analyze what has been implemented and what (and why) has not been implemented. To some, this seems like just a fun activity, while others are sure that it is the lists that help organize your life. But sometimes it happens that in the list of goals the cherished "tick" is far from opposite each item. We talked with a psychologist at the Victory in You Center for Innovative Psychology and Human Efficiency to find out whether it is important to set goals in life, why it is worth doing, and why goals are not always achieved.

- Why is it so important to have a purpose in life? What does it do?

- The goal in life is a kind of reference point. It helps you keep your desires in focus and understand if you have the resources to fulfill them. Life can be compared to a dense forest. The target is your compass in a vast forest of possibilities. If you walk in the woods without a compass, there is a good chance that you will simply get lost. Or you will wander through it for a very, very long time.

- How to understand what exactly is the goal in life?

- It is important to listen to yourself. When we work with clients on setting goals, during the conversation, many realize that they often confuse other people's dreams and goals with their own. Yes, yes, now, when we see the supposedly ideal life of other people on social networks, it often seems to us that we want what they have. It seems that we, too, want to be successful entrepreneurs, drive prestigious cars and relax in Bali. But this can be self-deception and pseudo-desires. In fact, we want to be as happy and self-realized as these people seem to us. Therefore, again, it is important to listen to yourself. Understand what is important to you. What do you want? Of money? Glory? A huge family? A career in public relations? Understand that only you know what can make you happy. Only you can set the right goal.

- How to set a goal correctly in order to achieve it?

- Once you have realized what you want to strive for, take a piece of paper (open "Notes" on your phone, buy a notebook) and write down how you will go towards this goal. Sort out what steps you need to take to achieve your dream. This way you can roughly estimate how long you will need. You need to be prepared for the fact that sometimes it will take weeks, months, sometimes years to reach the goal. For example, if you want to build a house, you need to find finance for a construction site, buy a plot, find contractors, a construction team, a designer, purchase materials and other issues. And the construction itself is carried out in stages: first the foundation, then the walls, roof, cosmetic repairs. By understanding how long it can take to reach your goal, it will be easier for you to stay on track.

- What to do if you can't achieve your goal on your own? It seems that there is motivation, and the plan is outlined, but it still does not work out?

Try to see a psychologist. A specialist will help you step by step to get closer to your intended goal. To begin with, you will learn how to prioritize - this is quite an important skill that will help you abstract from the opinions of others. Very often it is the people who surround us that are the restraining factor that does not allow us to move on. After setting your priorities, you and your specialist will carefully formulate a goal and objectives that will help you achieve it. Then you divide the tasks into major and minor. The finished plan will serve as a guideline for you.

- What to do if in the middle of the path you lose heart?

- Throughout your journey, your counselor will support you if you have fears or other constraints (resistance, despair, etc.). Unfortunately, relatives and friends are not always able to support you to the extent that you would need it, so the help of a specialist will be very helpful.

Learn to listen and hear yourself! And if now it seems to you that you cannot do this, seek help from a specialist at the Center for Innovative Psychology and Human Efficiency "Victory in You". Here you will be helped to get to know your real self!
