History of the Kiev Planetarium

The Kiev planetarium is the oldest and largest in Ukraine. Thanks to thoughtful scientific and educational developments, it has great popularity among Kiev residents and guests of the capital. This is a unique cultural and entertainment space for your relaxation and development.

The planetarium was founded on January 2, 1952. For over 60 years, he has been confidently holding his position and attracting more and more interested astronomy enthusiasts. Today it occupies the 2nd place in Europe in terms of the size of the dome - as much as 830 square meters! The initiator of the creation of such a huge “Window to the Universe” was the astronomer scientist Sergei Vsekhsvyatsky. He devoted his whole life to the study of astronautics, and therefore decided to leave behind such a valuable cultural heritage.

Initially, the planetarium was created in the building of the Alexander Church, since in the era of the USSR there was a special attitude to religion. And only in 1987 he moved to Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, where he is today. New equipment was immediately installed in this room, which allowed visitors to see about 6.5 thousand stars. Over the years, ordinary slides have been used here to watch movies.

Features

The modern Kiev planetarium (ATMASFERA 360) is equipped with two projection systems at once: the old optical-mechanical “Zeiss Mark IV”, established back in 1987 and the supernova digital projection “Front Pictures X12”, which appeared only after modernization in 2016. It was after installing this system that they began to create their own unique programs.

Now many scientific and technical exhibits and art installations are being actively developed, which will not leave anyone indifferent. Thanks to cutting-edge computer technologies, nowadays it is possible to create a more informative and dynamic program support. Visitors can see various astronomical effects - the movement of comets, meteor shower, northern lights, solar and lunar eclipses.

Laboratories are open in the planetarium, master classes and impressive informative shows are held. There is also a special school for children aged 6 to 11 years, where astronomy classes are taught in a very easy and accessible form.

Today, the Kiev planetarium is the best vacation option for those who are inspired by the boundless expanses of our universe.
