Other than at Christmas, this is not a particulary fetching square. The cathedral is the real attration. But the real deterrents are the hustlers in costume who try to shake you down for money. And the place has pickpockets and dropped wallet scammers. Other than walking through it to go to one of the much better places in Kyiv, nothing to see here folks - move along!

Sofijski sobór to miejsce historyczne. Kompleks cerkiewny z zachowanymi fragmentami starych cerkwi i starych malowideł. Piękna architektura. po przekroczeniu murów otacza nas spokój. Warto jeśli ktoś lubi zabytki.

Lively during my visit (jan 12 to jan 15). Lots going on and a very central point in Kiev. It’s direct next to St. Sophia cathedral. Be careful not to get photos with guys dressed in animal suits. My wife foolishly got a photo with two of them and they proceeded to get very pushy and demanding when I gave them £5 each. They demanded more money and the situation required me to politely tell them to “get lost”. Don’t get hustled is my advice. This place is great during holidays and key events.

We were here around New Year's and before the Orthodox Christmas. The market here sells mostly good, cheap food and mulled wine, although there are a few kiddie rides. It is a very festive place to spend the early evening. Be warned, though: if you take a photo with the costumed characters walking through the market (such as Grandfather Frost), they want to get paid for it.
