The God of War series has outlived its usefulness and, in fact, fizzled out in the third part of the cycle. There was practically no intelligible plot in the stories of the adventures of the God of War, and the combat system, riddles and large-scale QTE-attractions were very tired and quickly lost their attractiveness and relevance.
The new God of War is a fundamentally different game: it has a deep storyline, great game mechanics and a different setting. Studio Santa Monica radically rethought the series, but at the same time retained the overall epic character of the franchise and added notes of melancholy to the game.
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED
The God of War of 2018 does not tell about Kratos the mad, but about Kratos settled down, about his relationship with his son and their common path through Midgard - the middle land of Scandinavian myths with its gods, spirits, dead and living beings. The initiation was started by the wife of Kratos: she, unfortunately, left this world. But shortly before his death, his spouse took a promise from him: he, together with his son Atreus (the boy, by the way, does not know who his father is.) Should climb to the very top of the mountain in the world and from there scatter its ashes. The last request of his beloved is the main driving force of the plot and the motivation of the heroes. Kratos is now not a revenge-obsessed destroyer of Olympus, but a reasonable, cold-blooded and very strict father who wants only the best for his son and dreams that Atreus does not repeat his mistakes. The lost God of War has become much calmer, but the path to the mountain still forces him to use all divine power and anger against a bunch of enemies the heroes meet on the way. Father and son will have to fight a lot: tearing the mouths of monsters, breaking their bones, sping demons with arrows, and solve puzzles along the way - twist ancient mechanisms, move huge bridges and create crossings from magic light and much more. The scenery of mystical Scandinavia and parallel worlds, in which the story unfolds, is replete with the incredible beauty of the views of northern nature and the fabulously psychedelic atmosphere of the habitats of gods and spirits.
The developers managed to perfectly balance all the elements of God of War - there are many types of enemies in the game, and they are rarely repeated, and each new puzzle is not like the previous one, the mechanics of the combat system are fed gradually - in perfect portions for perception. The QTE-frenzy of the past parts in the new adventure of Kratos decided to cut and screw only at the really suitable moments. Kratos now wields the Leviathan - an ax previously owned by his wife - mother Atreus. The cleaver is perfectly felt in the hands - it not only plays the role of a piercing-cutting object, but also excellent as a throwing projectile capable of knocking the enemy off his feet, or breaking his skull and then, at the behest of one button, return to the hero's hand. In addition, the ax is often used to solve puzzles: with it, you can freeze the mechanisms of bridges in order to cross the cliff, or quickly throw it into three runes far apart from each other - to remove the lock from the sarcophagus with valuable loot. The hero gets his classic weapon closer to the middle of the game.
CRASH AGAIN, BUT ALREADY MORE THANKS TO
The combat system of the new God of War in the first couples may seem very similar to that of Dark Souls. Only they implemented it a little differently: Kratos, unlike the heroes of From Software's works, is obedient and responsive to every button press. And the very essence is the same as in Souls games - there is a roll, powerful and normal attack, shield defense and ... the ability to activate the Spartan rage mode. And special boost attacks decorate battles and make them more cinematic. Leviathan can be improved in every possible way with two funny and cute gnomes that Kratos and his son occasionally meet on the way. The functionality of the ax is wide, and it lends itself to flexible improvement, like the bow of Atreus.
Atreus does not just imitate helping his father on the battlefield - he really makes life easier for the parent, and it is very difficult to send some enemies without his arrows to the next world. In addition, the son perfectly knows how to distract attention to himself so that Kratos can calmly carry out a successful attack, and with a certain pumping, the offspring will be able to jump onto the enemies' shoulders and playfully poke them with a knife (the knife used to belong to his mother) and thus giving his father the opportunity to calmly punish the ill-wisher ...
In fact, the role of Atreus in the process of passing is very important: over time, the bowstring of the Claw (the so-called bow) can be endowed with the ability to create bridges of magical light in some places, and then open passages to closed territories. The little son is the perfect companion and perhaps one of the most useful artificial companions in the history of video games.
INITIATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LIFE EXPERIENCE
In the new God of War, there was a pumping of skills and the ability to improve and buy new armor. In the game menu, there are a lot of different sections and subsections - you can customize and improve everything both from Kratos and Atreus. It is possible to improve armor with the help of new enchantments, buy a more powerful talisman, invest experience in learning new skills of a father or son, etc. The game allows you to customize the heroes as the player likes, make attacks more powerful, or invest "exp" in the development of defense, or endow Kratos with agility and the ability to parry enemy attacks with a shield for subsequent counterstrike. From a visual point of view and art design, God of War is one of the most beautiful interactive adventures in the history of the industry. Northern nature, mixed with the beauty of the mythical Midgard, looks amazing from the word "absolutely". Mountain landscapes, forests, the appearance of animals, heroes and other creatures - everything is at the highest level. Both picturesque and technically perfect.
The flowery RPG component of the new God of War is a great innovation.
WONDERFUL ANCIENT WORLD
The world of God of War is reminiscent of Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The game has several locations that are logically connected to each other, in which many side activities and puzzles are hidden, which reveal secret "goodies" and bonuses. As in many Zeldas, it is impossible to get into the closed places of Midgard without gaining the ability to go further. The main campaign of the game can be completed in 15-20 hours, and quite simple, but at the same time, exciting side quests can stretch the pleasure of the game for the same amount of time. The developers have achieved realistic smooth animation, great play of light and shadows, incredibly truthful snow crumbling underfoot. and other little things, not only thanks to a hefty budget. In the game, you can feel the complete dedication of the guys from the Santa Monica Studio team.
Structurally and technically, God of War is doing well.
THE TALE OF THE FATHER AND THE SON
God of War tells the story of the formation of Kratos' father and his son Atreus. Their path, as I wrote above, is an initiation for both. Outwardly, a strict and cold-blooded dad is madly in love with his son and wants him not to repeat his mistakes, he protects his successor, but in his gut he understands that the son must grow up, become a man at such a tender age in this cruel world must be done quickly. For Kratos, the path to the mountain is also a process of maturation - from a man to a wise, lived and morally mature parent. Not only young people, but also mature people passed the rites of initiation among various peoples of the world. Any test of the hero is a path of internal and external transformations. The tales of Scandinavia or any other ancient people are based on the experiences of initiates who, under the influence of a "magic" drink (or psychoactive mushrooms) - they were given by a local shaman or sorcerer - went to the world of the dead. From there, the heroes brought stories about gods, demons, angels, old women with bone legs, goblin and extraordinary beauty parallel worlds.
Kratos' wife knew that a husband and son need to go through a difficult path in order to change, because personality transformation is a natural and necessary nature of things, especially for a gloomy father with a dark past and a young son. And a journey to the fabulous "world of the dead" is the best metaphor for growing up and an ideal means for this (if you are a resident of some fabulous world).

SUMMARY

The new God of War is radically different from the previous games in the depth of the story, more thoughtful gameplay and the melancholic atmosphere of Scandinavian myths. But at the same time, the game retained the elements of the epic nature of what is happening, typical for the series, and ... it's still the same Kratos, only with a reasonable mindset and a loving heart. This "God of War" is a reference action game and the best illustration of how a person changes in his life path. The Spartan's New Adventure is a must-see for everyone, and yet another good reason to buy a PlayStation 4.
