Diagnostics of vision involves checking visual acuity, computer diagnostics and selection of the optimal correction.

Visual acuity testing is carried out subjectively, separately for each eye using a projector of signs of different sizes. As a rule, with myopia (myopia), distance vision is significantly reduced, with age-related farsightedness (presbyopia), it can remain one hundred percent.

Computer diagnostics of vision is carried out using an automatic refractokeratometer POTEC, which objectively and quickly determines the type and degree of refractive error of the eye (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism). This study does not determine the condition of the fundus and does not measure intraocular pressure. It is the best tool for correct and accurate selection of spectacle and contact correction. In children, it is carried out preferably with a preliminary dilation of the pupil.

According to computer diagnostics, using a trial set of lenses, the correct, comfortably tolerable correction is selected and a prescription for glasses is written. In addition to the diopter value, it indicates the center-to-center distance - the distance between the centers of the pupils of both eyes, which is of great importance for installing lenses in the frame and further visual comfort in glasses. The center-to-center distance is measured with a special ruler, separately for each eye.
During the selection of glasses, various special tests are also used, which are in service with optometrists and ophthalmologists, with the help of a sign projector and a trial set lens. They help to avoid unnecessary correction, to balance the load on the eyes, to correctly determine the value of the "addition" for the near when choosing glasses for work.

When choosing contact lenses, in addition to diagnosing vision and determining correction, the services of an ophthalmologist also include an examination with a slit lamp (biomicroscope), where the state of the anterior segment of the eye is assessed under high magnification. This is necessary to determine the state of the cornea and conjunctiva, to identify contraindications for wearing lenses, possible inflammatory or allergic complications, to assess the fit of the lens on the eye, as well as to detect cataracts, dry eye syndrome, etc.
