In a city & country where there are 2 or 3 or 4 cafes & restaurants on nearly every block in the city center, Avalon stands out as one of the more consistently busy upscale night spots for a chic crowd. Featuring a restaurant on the 1st floor, a good karaoke room on the 2nd floor & a large opulently furnished lounge & terrance on the 3rd floor, it's the place to take a date OR as a single person perhaps a place to "site see". The ornate lavish furniture & decor lends to the lush comfort of each room. The 3rd floor terrace is usually the most consistent hub of activity with a view of the city and non-intrusive DJd music or a live performer. For example, on a Sunday evening in Kiev you might not find any venue with people but Avalon would be 1 of your most likely places to find half a crowd. The service! OYYYYY!! As it is in all Ukraine, you'll get greeted quickly & politely, seated quickly & politely and ... and ... perhaps in the next 5 minutes someone will come by to load your table with far too many menus and then walk away. Another 5 minutes later a waiter will drop by to take your order. Then expect to wait ... and wait ... and wait ... Table service in Ukraine generally is an extreme exercise in patience, but Avalon really stretches one's patience. When I visit a greasy spoon cafe with cheap prices, I expect the service to reflect that. In other words, I don't expect much. BUT when I'm paying a king's ransom for menu items, I demand service to match. So there we sat, begging again for the 2nd time to anyone within earshot if we could get some service. Nothing. As the restaurant manager frequently passed by our table, he seemed entirely oblivious to the fact that we sat there, glasses empty, looking desperately like we wanted service, ... but even the manager didn't bother to notice or care. THAT is the standard of restaurant service in Ukraine. When the waiter finally does make an appearance at a table, there's no multi-tasking. If he/she brings a table their bill, certainly he/she didn't think to also bring the drink or the bill for another table with his/her other free hand. And so, if you're the 3rd table with a potential request to that waiter, expect to be completely 3rd after a fully executed 1st & then 2nd table has been waited on. As I said, multi-tasking is not part of the waiter's skill set. A simple Americano coffee could take 20 minutes to arrive at your table.Abandoning the idea of adding food onto our order, and at $18 per glass of $7 wine and no service, we eventually became so enraged that we finally just left money on the table & exited, sorry to have capped off a potentially nice evening with such a sour experience. If you're considering traveling to Ukraine, generally keep in mind the following:- Ukrainians are friendly folks, polite & willing to try to speak some English to help communicate.- The streets are generally safe but do NOT come to the rescue of anyone in sudden need. It could be a trick. There are (annoyingly) 2 or 3 police standing on every street corner. Let them or some local person help.- Anticipate lots & lots of options for cafes, restaurants, convenience kiosks, little & big grocery markets, etc. Most cafes & restaurants are quaint & interesting. But absolutely bring a truckload of patience for service.- When taking a taxi, learn from a "local" what the fare ought to be to a destination. Negotiate that price first with the taxi driver, then stick to it because ... when the taxi drivers learn that you're a foreigner, they'll immediately try to up the charge to ridiculous rates.- Too many shops, restaurants, banks, hotels, etc have a surplus of security personnel posted at their doors. They'll always give you that "what do you want here?" glare. Ignore them! Just stride past them.- There's nothing wrong with scoping out a restaurant or hotel room before committing to it. Just do it.- For nightlife, stand-up bars & mingling is a North American idea. Don't expect to find it in Ukraine, even in a busy lounge or bar where everyone sits nice & neat at their tables. There's no mingling. So ... if you want to meet someone or catch their attention, get creative but be classy about it.
